Reading Text: The Unexpected Rescue

The storm came from above without warning, covering the valley in absolute darkness. Unlike previous rainy seasons, where the town received steady showers, this time there were so few clear days that the ground couldn't absorb the water. Notwithstanding the local authorities' warnings, a small group of hikers had gone up the mountain the day before. Now, they were trapped somewhere near the dangerous rocky cliffs.

The rescue team knew that in default of a proper helicopter, they would have to reach them on foot. The path was extremely narrow, a tiny passage from between two massive walls of stone. However much the wind blew against them, the guides advanced, moving forward somehow through the mud and debris. They checked their equipment constantly, just in case they needed to camp overnight in the freezing wilderness.

The operation was executed with due regard for the safety of the volunteers, without regard to the high financial costs it implied. After five hours of intense climbing, the guides saw a faint light blinking from beneath a collapsed wooden shelter. The hikers were cold and exhausted, but safe.

"We hardly had any food left," said the youngest hiker, a detail for which the rescuers were well prepared. They immediately provided warm blankets and hot soup, by which they managed to stabilize the group's temperature before starting the long journey back home.
